In terms of teaching guitar, my main instrument, I specialize in teaching improvisation and developing solos or lines over chord progressions. I also am versatile in early any style of music and can help any student play what they want to play fast because I understand anything they throw at me. I also excel at teaching jazz and bluegrass because of my extensive knowledge in theory and mandolin, respectively.

Since my own interest is in avant-garde, experimental, improvised music, my teaching emphasis is on developing the student's original voice and creative confidence outside the confines of any specific genre. On guitar, I'm comfortable with folk, rock, blues, and the basics of jazz playing, but my tendency is to try and identify in an abstract way what concepts or techniques will most serve the student's development, whether that be an increased understanding of notation, harmony, melody, some…

I concentrate on ear training, improvisation, and explore styles ranging from pop, alternative, rock, prog, and blues, to metal, funk, and folk etc. I do not sight read. Rather, I work with the student with theory and arrangement conventions to really understand the music. This intern, greatly sharpens their musical ear and helps them to learn music much faster because they understand how it is put together; why and how it works, etc.

I have several different approaches to teaching. It all depends on the level of the student and comes down to practicality and effective ways of presenting material so it can be remembered, processed and developed further. I use tablature for beginners simply out of practicality. I prefer to move to more hands on approaches with ear-training and note-reading as soon as possible to allow a more universal way of learning instruments and music that allow the student to see beyond the scope of th…

Half-Step Slips By Michael Hoffman

Here's a great way to spice up your solos. The concept is simple: While you're improvising with a scale, momentarily move your line a half-step up or down to create tension. Slipping back to the original scale releases the tension. Moving up or down -- going out -- is easy. Getting back in smoothly takes a little practice.

Outside in. This example illustrates the process. Begin by playing A Dorian (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) over Am7 as notated. Notice how the line shifts to B Dorian (B, C, D, E, F, G, A) on the and of beat four. This tension-producing "half-step higher" state lasts through bar 2, beat three. The F passing tone (labeled PT) adds even more drama within B Dorian. After returning to A Dorian, the line drops to A Dorian (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) for four beats and then rejoins A Dorian for one final note.

Other flavors. Once you've learned this phrase, try giving major and dominant scales the half-step slip. For best results, establish the sound of the inside scale before you move outside -- and be sure to wind up back inside!
