I have experience with many styles of guitar-playing, including jazz, classical, rock, and folk. Most of my performances have been in classical and jazz styles, though I have spent many summers playing acoustic guitar for camp fires. Professionally, I am a sound designer for theater, putting to use my training in music theory and composition. I have also composed original music for two full-length theatrical productions, as well as conducted an ensemble of eight musicians for one of those pro…

When teaching children, I prefer Alfred's method books for their accessibility and simplicity. I have a very deep knowledge of jazz and jazz history from classic new orleans to the most contemporary styles. I also teach classical music on the upright bass and piano and have students playing Beethoven and Bach regularly. I have a thorough knowledge of Western classical music history and as a composer, am an expert theoretician. I have taught rock and pop guitar for many years and have always f…

I start by setting specific goals (within a defined time-frame) and develop a program accordingly. I am comfortable with jazz, rock and all popular forms of American music (r&b, funk, folk, etc) I have worked extensively with Latin American rhythms from Son, Bossa Nova, Samba, Bolero, to more uncommon like traditional Colombian (cumbia, vallenato) and Peruvian (landó, festejo) rhythms

I am interested in teaching unusual instruments such as ukulele, singing saw, electronic autoharp (and regular autoharp). I can also teach guitar (I have been playing myself for about 18 years), singing and songwriting. I have a very easy going style which consists of the two of us sitting one on one and starting with the basics, then moving on to learn others' songs (The Beatles or other stand by classics are a good place to start) and then trying to compose our own songs, as well, if there …

Mastering 7-String Minor 7th Arpeggios with Buz McGrath of Unearth

0.GP1109_Lessons_Met~nrAS METAL HAS EVOLVED, THERE HAS BEEN a trend toward lowered tunings. In an effort to make their music sound deeper and darker, many guitarists have turned to alternate and dropped tunings, as well as 7-string guitars. Buz McGrath, lead guitarist of the metal band Unearth, has been slinging his 7-string on stage for over ten years, pioneering some great techniques along the way. In this lesson, I want to share some of his cool arpeggio patterns that span all seven strings. Note to 6-string players: If you play the first two notes of the 7-string sweep arpeggios on the 7th and 10th frets of the sixth string (using your 1st finger), you can play this lesson without a 7-string.

I worked with Buz creating an instructional program outlining his style and techniques, and found him to be quite diverse as a player. Buz often adds minor 7th and diminished riffs and arpeggios into his music and, although he can shred masterfully, he allows melody to find its way into the mix. The example I’m going to share with you is inspired by the lead section from the Unearth song “Crow Killers” from their CD The March, and it incorporates one of his signature 7-string arpeggios.

http://www.guitarplayer.com/uploadedImages/guitarplayer/GP1109_Lessons_Metal_Ex-1.jpg In Ex. 1, the lead section begins with a melodic line that climbs up the neck in three segments. Pay close attention to his vibrato at the end of each phrase.

http://www.guitarplayer.com/uploadedImages/guitarplayer/GP1109_Lessons_Metal_Ex-2.jpg Ex. 2 is a minor 7th sweep arpeggio that starts on a B at the seventh string 12th fret and, using hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides, travels up to the 19th fret of the first string and all the way back down.

http://www.guitarplayer.com/uploadedImages/guitarplayer/GP1109_Lessons_Metal_Ex-3.jpg Ex. 3 is a similar minor 7th arpeggio but Buz finishes it off with a nice melodic line. Pay close attention to the fingering, it will help you cross all the strings smoothly.
